The Event

In 2018, we experienced a Talent Density event. The event itself did not surprise me. The immediate aftermath did.
My business partner at the time and I decided to go our separate ways.
What surprised me was that 80% of the team went with him.
I retained 80% of the clients and business.
I had 20% of the team to support 80% of the clients.
This core team supported our clients during the transition without skipping a beat.
We leveraged our Talent Density.
We had fewer people.
Those people were high-performing, creative, collaborative and efficient.
Over the next two years, we:
Added new team members
Opened 2 new offices
Transformed our asset management program
It wasn’t just talent – it was understanding how different types of intelligence work together.
Grafting Wisdom and Youth
There are two types of intelligence – fluid and crystallized.
Fluid intelligence peaks in the early stages of our career and diminishes over time.
It allows us to learn new things, solve complex problems, and act quickly.
Crystallized intelligence increases as we age, and we acquire more wisdom. We’re not as quick as we used to be in solving complex problems, but we are wise from experience.
All elite teams that I have been a part of, and studied, seemed to find a way to graft the fluid intelligence of youth with the crystallized wisdom of experience.
It’s the combination that creates legacies – and where extraordinary things continue to be accomplished over the years.
These teams developed training and development programs based on a mastery learning process.
The bottom line: Knowing how to combine fluid and crystallized intelligence starts with understanding how adults really learn.
Mastery Learning Process
70% of adult learning comes from “doing”. Immerse your new talent in the regular flow of business.
Our interns serve as the second chair in client visits. They are involved in production and follow-up beginning in week 2.
10% of adult learning is gained from taking classes, reading books, or listening to podcasts.
Every team member has a learning path through licensing and on to designations that supports the 70% learning on the job.
20% of adult learning is through coaching/mentoring. This is a critical component of our success in developing multi-generational, self-leading teams.
Our Second Chair Academy (2CA) is the backbone of our group coaching.
Our team members are mentored or mentoring through regular case time and 1w1 sessions.
The bottom line – Recognize that multi-generational talent density is critical for transformational 10X growth. Set-up a learning and development program following the 70/20/10 rule.
