Motion Offense

Laura and I had a privilege to meet legendary Coach K in 2024. We had a great time playing “motion offense” at the Ameriprise National conference.

Motion offense is exciting — a constantly fluid way to play basketball 🏀 (or rugby 🏉). It is about understanding the plays, making reads on what is happening around you and having freedom to break the play and score.
For the last 40 years, I have always had a plan. I am constantly observing what is happening around me. I made reads and broke plays to achieve what I want for myself.
- In my 20s I wanted to leave the Balkans. I made reads that if I left before the war, my family would be in grave danger, and I would not be able to help. I decided to stay until the end of the war.
- That changed everything.
- I was playing motion offense. I just didn’t know that’s what it was called.
In my 40s, I started a business. I knew that having a wealth management team practice would be the right thing for my clients and me. I had a plan.
- Based on the situation around me, I made reads and adjusted that plan many times to get to a point where my business is now — a multi-generational business.
- My clients feel that if something happens to me, the team is there to take care of them and continue supporting, guarding, and growing their wealth.
- In the process we have built a team that leads itself and makes a positive impact on our clients and our community.
- Motion offense is part of my legacy.
🤩 Making Reads
Making reads means observing what’s happening and having freedom to break the plays and go in a different direction to accomplish the mission.
Why it matters: Most people are more comfortable playing defense, often on themselves. Good “readers” are successful because they adapt quickly to changing situations, rather than sticking to a plan that isn’t working.
- This skill is valuable whether you’re coaching, leading a team, or navigating daily life.
Simple analogy: It’s like being a detective who makes fast decisions.
- Look at the clues, figure out the situation, and choose your next move — all in real time.
In different contexts:
- Sports: A quarterback “reads” the defense to decide where to throw the ball.
- Business: A manager “reads” a meeting to know when to speak up or stay quiet.
- Social situations: You “read the room” to know if your joke will land.
- Gaming: Players “read” their opponents to predict their next move.
🏆 Adapt & Take Action
Observe without judgment.
Make reads on what the situation demands to accomplish the mission.
Adapt & change your strategy in real time.
This is how winners think.
