    • Importance of having a Coach
    • Defining a purpose worthy of our best efforts
    • Define your WHY statement

Elite teams have Coaches

Ray Kelly and I during a coaching session in January 2016. Ours is one of the most meaningful relationships of my life.
In 2010, we were a team in the name only.

  • Maybe one notch above it.
  • We achieved significant growth, and I was feeling that we are just scratching the surface of our potential.
  • I knew that I needed to grow my leadership skills and capacity to unlock the potential of my team.

Scrolling LinkedIn one day, I noticed that Ray Kelly—a leader that I respected and considered to be a role model, had started a coaching business.

I sent Ray a message.

  • He responded immediately.
  • During that first conversation, he said something that changed everything:

“You need to have a purpose worthy of your team’s best efforts.”

That single insight sparked a transformation in my leadership approach. A moment of professional frustration evolved into one of the most valuable coaching relationships of my career—one that continues to shape how I lead today.

A purpose worthy of your best efforts

In 2011, after months of collaboration with our Client Advisory Board and team members, we defined our WHY as above.
Profit is not the purpose of a business.

  • It is a result.

Why it matters: Defining a purpose that is worthy of your team’s best efforts is the most important role of leader.

  • This is not an easy task.
  • It is not “check the box” type of work.
  • Engage your team and your clients to get insights.

Focus on the problem that you are trying to solve.

  • Life is complex. Information overload leads to inaction.
  • It is not about what we know. It is about what we do with the knowledge to make people’s lives better, easier and safer.
  • Being useful while serving others — removing the obstacles of progress. This is valued by clients and meaningful to your team members.

Define your WHY

  • Three to seven words.
  • Simple language.
  • Invokes emotion.
  • Big and bold.
  • Bigger than a goal.
  • Involves everyone.
  • Not about the money.
