The “Mayor” - Brent in his Element

Brent Makarczyk and I at our annual “Advance”, 2024

At a 2019 Vikings game, some of the team hunkered down in US Bank Stadium to watch the game, have some drinks and catch up.

  • Then, there was Brent. Brent was not only talking to us. Brent was creating his own community within a three-row (or more) radius of our seats.

Watching him work a stadium section was witnessing someone in their natural habitat.

  • He wasn’t just making small talk—he was building connections.

  • Learning about the couple with season tickets, organizing impromptu cheers (and jeers) – Vikings fans and rivals alike fell under his spell.

What stood out wasn’t just his extroversion, but the genuine interest and joy he took in every conversation.

  • He wasn’t networking; he was being Brent.

  • No agenda, no work angle—just authentic relationship-building that comes as naturally to him as breathing.

That’s Brent in his zone.

Adding Engines to our “Plane”

Building a self-leading team that will outlast me as a founder is like building a plane.

  • For the first 15 years, I felt that my business was a single engine plane. I was that engine.

  • Any engine failure and the plane would crash.

As I was envisioning the future, I realized that our plane must have multiple engines.

  • When Maria became a G2 owner, our plane operated with two engines.

  • It was time to add a third engine.

Maria and I invited Brent to join our firm in 2021 and bring his team because of the depth of trust that we had developed with each other over the years.

  • Brent was our coaching client, and his business was running in a very similar way to ours.

  • His team had similar values; their diverse talents would deepen our talent density.

  • Our Guardians of the Galaxy confirmed that Brent and his team would be a great fit and they would deepen our talent density.

The bottom line: The trust that Maria, Brent and I developed over the years was the most important factor in our relationships. The time had come to put it to work.

I often say that Brent makes me more human.

  • His archetypes compliment mine and Maria’s.

  • Every team should have a Brent!

Trust first. Unique talents next.

When selecting partners for your business I have learned that the following model works the best. Ask yourself:

  1. Do I trust them?

  2. Do they have a similar vision of the future?

  3. Are our values aligned?

  4. Do we have the same work ethic?

The bottom line: If you answer all four questions “YES”, then everything else should be workable.
